Managing Sciatica Pain

Do you think you may be suffering from Sciatica pain? The pain is oftentimes persistent and severe. While the body will typically heal itself without medical intervention, pain management is of upmost importance.

Symptoms for this condition include pain localized to one side of the body which radiates from the lower back through the buttocks and down the leg, it worsens when sitting or standing and may include numbness or tingling in the leg. Common causes include a slipped vertebra, a narrowing of the spinal canal, Degenerative Disc disease, pregnancy or muscle spasms in the buttocks. More severe cases may require surgery, but with most, there are simple steps you can take to provide relief while your body heals.

Before beginning treatment, it is important to first schedule a medical exam and discuss your plans with your doctor.

Stay active – When in pain, movement may seem counterintuitive, but long periods of rest can worsen discomfort. Mild to moderate exercise, like a walk, can help reduce inflammation, which causes pain.

Massage therapy – Massage can be very effective to increase blood flow, relax lower back muscles that place stress on the nerve root and encourage the release of endorphins, which act as a natural pain reliever.

Stretching – Stretching improves your flexibility, corrects your posture and can reduce inflammation of the gluteal muscles that put pressure on the nerve.

Chiropractic care – Spinal manipulation can help increase spinal mobility. This helps to restore function and decrease pain.

Medication – Helpful over the counter medications are non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, like ibuprofen. Your doctor may also prescribe oral steroids, muscle relaxers or narcotics.

Steroid Injections – An injection near the nerve root is typically reserved for severe cases. The effects last for a few months, but frequency is limited due to potential severe side effects.
